Cheap, Super Easy Donuts

You will be surprised by how easy these are! I've made them twice now and the whole family just gobbles them up. Next time you have a craving for donuts, try these.

DONUTS

refrigerate biscuits (I know what you're thinking...but, don't knock it 'til you try it)
enough melted shortening or vegetable oil to cover about 1-2 inches of a pan

Heat oil on medium to medium/high heat for about five minutes.
(If your oil starts smoking its too hot! I found medium was perfect)
Shape biscuits by poking a hole into the dough and stretching it out.
Drop dough into heated oil (Learn from my mistake and test the oil with only one donut! We lost three this morning to oil that was too hot. The outsides cooked before the inside was finished.)
Heat until a dark golden brown (It doesn't take long so don't put too many in at a time)
Flip and cook the other side.
Drain on wire rack with paper towel underneath
(Keith's dad doesn't have a wire rack so I just put them on paper towels.)

Next cover them with whatever you like best. The first time, I put icing sugar (powder/confectioners sugar) and cinnamon in a large Ziploc and shook up the donuts while they were warm.

This time I found a recipe for glaze and made cinnamon glaze, vanilla glaze, and chocolate glaze.

If you live in the USA this is a SUPER inexpensive treat. We buy the biscuits at Save-A-Lot for forty cents a roll. This morning I made three rolls. The other ingredients were already in the pantry. A special breakfast treat for $1.20 that fed three adults and three small children. (I could have made more, but then we'd eat them!) I only wish we hadn't forgotten to buy some coffee on Saturday!

I've tried donuts from scratch before and, well... they didn't work so good! These are so simple. Enjoy.

I love collecting recipes that are cheap, simple, AND tasty. If you have any, I would love to try them. Have a great day and have a donut.

That's the same way my mom made them, and me too! My kids like for me to cook them whole and then poke a hole in the side and put jelly in them with a cake decorators bag and then dip them in confectionary sugar. I also cut them in half and twist them, just for something different. My kids LOVE them with chocolate canned icing!!
