The Value of Nothing

I'm going to invite you to listen in on a little conversation that took place between us and our son who will be five in a few weeks. This took place today in the van. It went something like this:

Jerry: "Is Zero a number?"
Mommy: "Yes, zero is a number."
Jerry: "If zero's a number, how much is it?"
Mommy: "Zero doesn't have a value, that means it's nothing. But if you put it after a number it changes that number, like if you put a zero with a one it becomes ten."
Jerry: "Oh... What does ten and zero make?"
Mommy: "One hundred."
Jerry: "And what does one hundred with another zero make?"
Mommy: " One thousand."
Jerry: "ONE THOUSAND... wow, that is a lot of money."
Mommy: "It sure is."
Jerry: "I wish we had a thousand dollars!"
Daddy: "Yeah, so do I."
Jerry: "Yeah, we could buy everything in the whole wheeled (world)!"
Daddy: "Well, we could pay some bills. Maybe we could even go to a nice restaurant."
Jerry: "Yeah, we could go to McDonald's."

This shows you the difference between preschoolers and their parents.We see zero as having no value. He sees it as a mighty magic number that makes things bigger. He sees a thousand dollars as enough money to buy everything in the world. We see enough money to pay some bills. We think a nice restaurant is a place where you're seated and someone else serves you and it doesn't involve a hamburger. He thinks McDonald's is a nice restaurant because you don't have to wait long for your food and you can climb around in Playland.
